Animas River Flood of 2026

Shout out to Durango, CO, for showing up in the aftermath of devastating flood events in the Animas River and its tributaries.

Rivers really are the lifeblood of a community. And if we take care of them, they can continue to be for generations to come.

We saw that in Durango, Colorado, Megafauna HQ, when locals came out of the woodwork to witness the Animas River roaring through Smelter Rapid at 11,600 CFS—its highest flow since 1970.

(If you're having trouble picturing that, imagine 11,600 basketballs passing you every second.)

The parking lot was packed, the riverwalk was buzzing, and the community gathered around something that connects us all.

But rivers also remind us of their extraordinary power, sometimes with devastating consequences.

In early November, severe flooding brought destruction to communities throughout the region. Junction Creek Road and neighboring homes suffered extensive damage, while Hermosa Creek carved a new course through the Animas Valley.

For many families and landowners, the consequences are still unfolding. Homes, land, and livelihoods have been damaged or lost.

It's heartbreaking to witness, and our thoughts are with everyone navigating the aftermath.

We're also deeply grateful to the neighbors, volunteers, first responders, and community members who have stepped up to help.

Rivers sustain our communities, and in difficult moments like these, it's the people who sustain one another.

With love and gratitude,

Larry and Barry 🦛
